The fundamental difference between the scanner and the motor tester is that the scanner itself does not measure anything (sensors in its composition does not have), but only reads the results of measurements and their analysis performed by the control system of any unit of the car; motor tester-a device for measuring and displaying analog parameters in various electrical circuits of the car, for which external sensors connected to the circuits are used, as well as for testing mechanical systems of the engine. Moreover, the scanner receives information not in analog form, but in the language of the electronic device in the form of a digital code. Since the scanner is not a measuring device, but only a decoder, its capabilities are limited by the capabilities of the program embedded in the electronic control unit.
The completeness of the diagnostic information obtained by the scanner depends primarily on the control system developer and only in the second — on the scanner manufacturer. Scanners differ in their functionality and range of tested cars.
The scanner checks the input and output parameters of the electrical circuits and informs the operator of their value. Thus, it only records the presence or absence of faults in any node, but does not allow to determine their causes, which may be many for the same values of the controlled parameters.
From the software point of view, the features of the tested car in the scanner are taken into account by means of retrofitting the basic device with the appropriate software product that reflects the specifics of the control electronics of the car of this brand. The additional program can be supplied as a reprogrammable external memory card (PCMCIA card), which are inserted into the scanner, which allows you to update the version of the program using a personal computer, including the Internet. The software update is important because no scanner manufacturer releases software "for all times" to the market, as it is simply impossible. The versatility of the scanner is determined by the depth of coverage, how full the list of electronic systems that the scanner can test on a car of this brand.
The specifics of cars from different manufacturers is not only to use different exchange protocols, but also diagnostic connectors of different configurations. To take this feature into account, universal scanners are equipped with a set of adapter cables for connection to the on-Board diagnostics system. In an effort to give the scanners more versatility, some developers provide their scanner with additional features.
